Kazakhstan (KZ) Pavlodar Province

Image: The GRES-2 power plant in Ekibastuz--Solnechnyy has the tallest smokestack in the world (420 meters). For comparison, the height of the Empire State Building (not including the spire) is 381 meters. GRES-2, located at a remote site near a major coalfield, is also remarkable because due to its enormous distance from customers, it is on a power line with a maximum transmission voltage of 1.15 million volts, the highest in the world. The line extends to Qostanay in western Kazakhstan and was originally planned to run from Barnaul in Russia's Altay Kray to Elektrostal in Moscow Province. Construction was halted due to the collapse of the Soviet Union and the line is currently run at "only" 500 000 volts.
