Image: Lake Baikal is the largest freshwater lake in the world by volume, containing 23.6 quadrillion liters of water, more than the Great Lakes combined. Unlike the Great Lakes, which were formed by glacial action in a relatively flat area, Lake Baikal is a rift valley lake similar to the large lakes of East Africa. Because the lake is formed by downward movement of the lake floor, Lake Baikal is much deeper than the Great Lakes, with a maximum depth of 1 637 meters. It is also far older, with an estimated age of 25 million years, which is long enough that species such as the Baikal oilfish are found in the lake which have evolved to deal with the conditions of perpetual darkness and extreme pressure at the bottom of the lake.
