Since the 1950's, the coastal areas around Tanghai have been converted into large fish farms. In places, ponds like those seen here extend as far as 15 kilometers into the sea.
Summary
Tangshan is a major city with a population of 1 100 000. The cities of Fengrun (250 000) in Fengrun District, Guye (190 000) in Guye District, and Fengnan (110 000) in Fengnan District and the major towns of Guye--Zhaogezhuang (70 000) in Guye District and Liyuan (22 000) in Kaiping District are in the Tangshan metropolitan area. Zunhua (85 000), Yutian (70 000), Leting (60 000), Qian'an (50 000), Luanxian (40 000), Qianxi (35 000), and Tanghai (30 000) are county seats in the region. The major towns of Woluogu (40 000) in Yutian County, Yangdianzi (40 000) in Qian'an Metropolitan County, Yahongqiao (22 000) in Yutian County, and Nanbao Yanchang (20 000) in Luannan County are also in the region. A major town 4.5 km W of Luanxian (30 000) in Luanxian County is unidentified.

Tangshan Region contains the Tangshan metropolitan area, 2 metropolitan counties, and 6 ordinary counties. It has an area of 13 206 km² and a population of 7 040 554.
The Tangshan metropolitan area has an area of 3 596 km² and a population of 2 978 018. This area is divided into 6 districts. The city of Tangshan has a population of 797 568 in 22 street committees. The 2000 Census gives a population of 935 580 with suburbs. With a 3.5% growth rate typical of Chinese cities, this gives an estimate of for 2004 of 1 100 000 corresponding to the measured area of 100 km².
