On February 4, 2004, the Harbin metropolitan area annexed Hulan County. On August 15, 2006, the Harbin metropolitan area annexed Acheng Metropolitan County. Both of these changes were accompanied by changes in the districts of the preexisting metropolitan area. Areas given are for the new districts.
The Harbin metropolitan area has an area of 7 452 km² and a 2000 Census population of 4 028 352 within the new boundary. This area is divided into 8 districts.
