Turkmenistan (TM) Mary Province

Image: The Karakum canal, depicted here at Wekilbazar, carries the waters of the Amu Darya to the Mary oasis, an ancient center of Turkic civilization. It continues far to the west past Ashgabat to Atrek on the Iranian border, extending a distance of 1 375 kilometers and carrying an annual volume of 13 trillion liters. Construction began on the canal from the Amu Darya in 1954 and reached Mary in 1959, Tejen in 1960, Ashgabat in 1962, and Gökdepe in 1967. Work on further extensions continued until 1988.
