Russia (RU) Tomsk Province

Image: Old log house in Tomsk. Tomsk was the largest city in Siberia prior to the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railroad in the 1890s, with a population in 1897 of 52 000. The railroad bypassed Tomsk and led to the development of the new city of Novosibirsk 200 kilometers to the south on the rail line, which grew from a population of 7 800 in 1897 to a population of 120 000 in the first Soviet census in 1926.
