Shantou Region contains the Shantou metropolitan area and Nan'ao County. Its area is 2 065 km² and its population is 4 671 279.
The Shantou metropolitan area has an area of 1 977 km² and a population of 4 600 927. Shantou proper has a population of 1 270 112 in 46 street committees. The 2000 Census gives a population of 1 028 334 in the street committees of the urban area. The 1982 Census gives a population of 722 805 in 226 km² for Shantou city, which suggests about 550 000 in the urban area. This gives a long-run growth rate of 3.5% and a 2004 estimated population of 1 200 000 corresponding to the measured area of 55 km².
Chaonan District (潮南区 ) 596 km²
On January 29, 2003, Chaoyang Metropolitan County was annexed by the Shantou metropolitan area and divided between Chaoyang District and Chaonan District. The corrected 2000 Census population is 1 006 637.
Chaonan (922 190 with suburbs) is in Xiashan urban township (峡山 ) and has an area of 51 km² and an estimated population of 1 000 000. Chendian (陈店 d), Liangying (两英 ), Lugang (胪岗 ), Simapu (司马浦 ) are suburbs of Chaonan. Chaonan has suburbs in Chaoyang District.
