Badghis Province has an area of 20 591 km² and a population of around 350 000. It has 7 districts: Ab Kamari, Ghormach, Jawand, Muqur, Murghab, Qadis, and Qala-e Now. Qala-e Now (قلعه نو Qal'a-e Now), the capital, has an area of 1.0 km² and an estimated population of 7 000.

Herat Province has an area of 54 778 km² and a population of around 1.4 million. It has 15 districts: Adraksan, Chisti Sharif, Farsi, Ghoryan, Gulran, Guzara, Injil, Karukh, Kohsan, Kushk, Kushki Kuhna, Obe, Pashtun Zarghun, Shindand, and Zinda Jan. Herat (هرات Heraat) has an area of 21 km² and an estimated population of 250 000.

Ghowr Province has an area of 36 479 km² and a population of around 550 000. It has 10 districts: Chaghcharan, Charsada, Dawlat Yar, Du Layna, Lal wa Sarganjal, Pasaband, Saghar, Shahrak, Taywara, and Tulak. There are no towns in this province large enough to appear in the sample.
