Tajikistan (TJ) Dushanbe and Regions of Republican Subordination

Image: The 300 meter high Nurek Dam (constructed 1980) on the Vakhsh River, the highest dam in the world, has a generating capacity of 3,000 megawatts. The Vakhsh is fed by glaciers in the vicinity of Ismoil Somoni Peak, the former Pik Kommunisma, which at 7 495 meters above sea level was the highest mountain in the Soviet Union. The electricity generated by dams on the Vakhsh is the main electricity source in Tajikistan, and much is used in aluminum manufacturing at Tursunzoda. The unfinished Roghun Dam, upriver from the Nurek Dam near Obigarm, was proposed to be 335 meters at completion.
