Wuxi is a major city with a population of 1 900 000. The major towns of Gangxia (28 000) in Xishan District, Qianzhou (28 000), Yanqiao (28 000), and Chang'an (25 000) in Huishan District, Huazhuang (22 000) in Binhu District, and Yuqi (22 000) in Huishan District are in the Wuxi metropolitan area. The cities of Jiangyin (300 000) and Yixing (150 000) are county seats in the region. Wuxi Region contains the Wuxi metropolitan area and 2 metropolitan counties. It has an area of 4 785 km² and a population of 5 086 586.

The Wuxi metropolitan area has an area of 1 621 km² and a population of 2 606 839. Wuxi proper has a population of 880 117 in 30 street committees. The 2000 Census gives a population of 1 580 513 with suburbs. The 1982 Census gives a population of 812 610 in 397 km² for Wuxi, which suggests about 650 000 in the urban area. This gives a long-run growth rate of 5.1% and a 2004 estimated population of 1 900 000 corresponding to the measured area of 140 km².
