Turkmenistan (TM) has an area of 488 100 km² and its population is about 5 million (2004 estimate). Its population is poorly known because the last reliable census was the Soviet census of 1989, which gives a population of 3 533 925.

It continues far to the west past Ashgabat to Atrek on the Iranian border, extending a distance of 1 375 kilometers and carrying an annual volume of 13 trillion liters.
