Kyrgyzstan (KG) Ysyk-Köl Province

Image: Lake Ysyk-Köl covers an area of 6 236 km². It is a mountain lake with a surface altitude of 1 606 meters, and is one of the deepest lakes in the world with a maximum depth of 668 meters. Because of its depth, the lake never freezes. Its water content (about 1.7 quadrillion liters) is very large, comparable to that of Lake Ontario, but the water is somewhat salty because the lake has no outlet, except possibly for groundwater leakage into the Chüy River near Balykchy. The lake is ringed with snow-capped mountains which rise to over 4 000 meters above sea level in places.

Summary

Balykchy, the capital, is a major town with a population of 40 000. The major town of Karakol (70 000) is also in the province.
