Tumxuq Metropolitan County is administered by the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (XPCC). It was created on November 29, 2002 from part of Maralbeshi County, Qeshqer Rural Region. The 2000 Census population of the area is 107 857.

Tumshuq, the 52nd brigade of the Xinjiang Construction and Production Corps, has an area of 2.0 km² and an an estimated population of 6 000.
